Fed: Country Labor calls for alliance against Costello push

The New South Wales Country Labor Party has urged rural MPs to form an alliance against
a radical federal government proposal to cut wages in the bush.

At the weekend, Federal Treasurer PETER COSTELLO said wages in regional Australia could
be made lower than those in cities as a way to fight unemployment in rural areas.

But Country Labor MP TONY KELLY says the move would devastate the regional economy.

He's called on regional politicians to set aside party allegiances to voice their disapproval.

He says that only if Mr COSTELLO understands that all of country NSW is against the
plan, will he call it off.
