Martin Jol says sporting director's signings helped cost him is job as Tottenham manager

Martin Jol has blamed Tottenham's refusal to buy the players he wanted for losing him his job.

Jol, who was fired as manager last week despite leading Spurs to two straight fifth-place finishes, said sporting director Damien Comolli ignored his request to buy an experienced midfielder and left winger.

Comolli instead sanctioned the spending of more than 30 million pounds (US$62.5 million; euro43.2 million) on striker Darren Bent, young defender Younes Kaboul, and inexperienced midfielders Kevin-Prince Boateng and Adel Taarabt.

"I felt the squad would be unbalanced with these signings and it proved to be the case," Jol was quoted as saying Friday by several British papers. "The funny thing is the new manager will probably come to the same conclusion and the club will go out in January and buy the two players I felt we needed."

Juande Ramos replaced Jol, who has been linked to PSV Eindhoven and Ajax in his native Netherlands, and has said he needs time to assess the squad before deciding whether to strengthen in the January transfer window.

Comolli was hired two years ago after Frank Arnesen left for Chelsea following an illegal approach by the-then Premier League champions.

"When Frank Arnesen was director of football, we spoke together about the players to bring to the club," Jol said. "But I did not have the same relationship with the next man. I think the club wanted to invest in younger players because they wanted to make money on them in the future.

"The decisions were not being made for football reasons. I knew that in the summer and realized my position was becoming very difficult."

Tottenham also brought in Gareth Bale in the offseason, but the Wales left back has been a huge success, impressing fans with his ability to attack from defense.
