WASHINGTON, March 2 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is the daily"Profile America" feature for March 3 from the U.S. Census Bureau:

THURSDAY, MARCH 3: A PARADE TURNED SOUR

Profile America -- Thursday, March 3. This is Women's HistoryMonth -- noting the accomplishments and courage of American womenfrom colonial times to the young women of today serving in the U.S.armed forces around the world. A major milestone for women in the20th century was winning the right to vote. One of the worst momentsin that effort occurred on this day in 1913, the day before PresidentWilson's inauguration, when a parade of more than 5-thousand women inWashington, D.C., turned into a near riot. Spectators jeered andshoved the marchers, and soldiers from nearby Fort Myer were calledin to restore order. The 19th Amendment to the Constitution, passedseven years later, guaranteed women the right to vote. In bothpresidential and off- year elections, more women now vote than men.
